Dry Eye Clinic

Our Dry Eye Clinic offers a comprehensive service that diagnoses, treats and monitors Dry Eye Syndrome and associated conditions such as Blepharitis.

The process starts with our Dry Eye Assessment in which a comprehensive evaluation is undertaken of the eye to assess the type and grade of ocular surface disease present, along with a detailed history and discussion to identify any  underlying causative factors.

Our Dry Eye Assessment will benefit you if you suffer from any of the following symptoms:

  • Gritty / scratchy eyes
  • Dry / sore eyes
  • Watery Eyes
  • Tired irritable Eyes
  • Red Eyes
  • Burning / stinging eyes
  • Blurry / variable vision
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Eye Pain during the night or on waking
  • Crusty eyes or eyelids
  • Foreign Body Sensation (feeling like they have something in them)

Following the assessment an individualised treatment programme is devised and follow ups are arranged to monitor the condition.

Our Treatment plans include some or all of the following:

  • Lid Hygiene
  • Dietary Supplements
  • Oral Tetracyclines
  • Lubricating drops
  • Punctal Occlusion (Blocking the Tear Drainage ducts)
  • Warm Compresses
  • Improving / changing causative Environmental factors
  • Steroid Eye Drops: usually in more severe cases
  • Scleral Contact Lenses: in severe or non-responsive cases
  • A review / change of medications that may be causing side effects

Dry Eye Syndrome can’t be cured but it can be successfully managed to improve symptoms. In many cases after treatment people have been able to resume or extend contact lens wear, or proceed onto laser eye surgery that they were previously turned away for.

Treatment options have improved greatly in the last few years and continue to do so. While it is possible to self-manage, best results are achieved by proper diagnosis and an individualized treatment approach with regular re-evaluation and monitoring of results.
