What Is Blepharitis ?

Blepharitis is a common condition in which there is an inflammation of the eyelids. It affects people of all ages. It is one of the leading causes of Dry Eye and it can also cause recurrent eye and lid infections such as Styes and Marginal Keratitis.

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Blepharitis ?

Blepharitis affects both the eyes and the eyelids.   In mild forms it may not cause any problems at all and you may be unaware of its presence. In more moderate to severe forms, it starts affecting both the comfort and appearance of your eyes and lids.

How the lids and eyes are affected depends on the type of blepharitis present.Often there are sensations of  dry, gritty, watery, burning eyes and they may look red and inflamed. The lid frequently have crusting, particularly around the base of the lashes, and the margins can be thickened, red and irregular.

What Causes Blepharitis ?

Blepharitis is either caused by an infection or inflammation or both, depending on the type of blepharitis.

There are two main types of blepharitis:

1. Anterior Blepharitis : mainly due to infection

2. Posterior Blepharitis: mainly due to inflammation

Can Blepharitis Be Cured ?

Anterior Blepharitis is curable, however posterior blepharitis is a chronic, incurable condition. Posterior Blepharitis however can be treated to improve it and reduce symptoms.

What Is the Treatment for Blepharitis ?

The treatment for blepharitis depends on the type of blepharitis.

Anterior Blepharitis Treatment: This involves finding the cause of the infection and treating accordingly.  Infection can be due to bacteria, parasites,

Posterior Blepharitis Treatment: The main cause of Posterior Blepharitis is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Click the highlighted text for more information on treatment of MGD. Other causes include Acne Rosacea and treatment is thus focussed on treating also any underlying associated conditions.

In both types of blepharitis careful cleaning of the eyelids and lid margins is usually also necessary and there are now effective, specialist cleansers particularly for treating the condition.
